Border crossings to avoid traffic jams when crossing over from Slovenia to Croatia
We have complied a list of all the border crossings from Slovenia to Croatia so you can avoid traffic jams and long tailbacks.
Do you know anyone who is travelling to Croatia soon?
The shortest route is not always the fastest
The most congested road border crossings between Slovenia and Croatia are usually the Istrian crossings of Dragonja/Kaštel, Sečovlje/Plovanija and Sočerga/Požane, Jelšane/Rupa near Opatija and particularly the transit crossing of Obrežje/Bregana on the motorway between Ljubljana and Zagreb and Gruškovje/Macelj on the route from Maribor to Zagreb.
If you have to wait for more than half an hour at any of these border crossings, it may be worth considering one of the alternative, smaller border crossings. They are mainly on somewhat slower roads, however the time saved at the border may quickly outweigh the few minutes longer it takes to drive along a regional road.
Podgorje/Jelovice border crossing: an alternative for reaching Croatian Istria and the west coast of Kvarner (Opatija, Mošćenička Draga, etc.). But be warned: this border crossing is closed between 24:00 and 06:00 from 1 June to 31 August, and from 22:00 to 24:00 during the rest of the year!

Babno Polje/Prezid border crossing: an alternative for reaching north Adriatic islands; a nice, but quite a bit longer, route through the refreshing mountain region of Gorski Kotar.

The Petrina/Brod na Kupi is often the best choice for reaching the north Adriatic islands. After crossing the border and driving up to Delnice, it is only a short drive to the Croatian motorway towards Rijeka or Zagreb and Split.

Vinica/Pribanjci border crossing: after travelling along the not-so-fast Slovenian road and finally making it to Vinica, the Croatian motorway towards the northern, central and southern Adriatic is only five kilometres away. The village of Bosiljevo is where the motorway from Zagreb branches off either towards Split and onwards to southern Dalmatia or towards Rijeka and Istria.

The Slovenska vas/Bregana naselje border crossing is the best choice when there are traffic jams at the nearby Obrežje/Bregana border crossing (and often even when there are not). And a bonus: when you cross the border at Slovenska vas (where freight lorries are not allowed) you will also avoid any potential tailbacks and the unavoidable costs of travelling through the Croatian toll station there. From 1 April this year, the toll for cars at that toll station is seven kunas (around €0.95) and during the high season it costs an additional one kuna (just under €0.15).
These are the prices for on-the-spot travellers, while those with ENC prepaid toll cards not only get to use the fast lane at toll stations but also enjoy a 21.74% discount, but which unfortunately does not apply to toll stations on the Istrian motorway, at the Učka tunnel and on the motorway between Zagreb and the Macelj/Gruškovje border crossing. These sections are not controlled by the Croatian motorway operators HAC (Croatian motorways) and ARZ (Rijeka-Zagreb motorway) but rather by foreign concessionaires.

To get to the Rigonce/Harmica border crossing, which can be an option if there are traffic jams at Obrežje, exit the Slovenian motorway from Ljubljana and Novo mesto towards Croatia at Čatež, and, after Harmica, the nearest connection to the Croatian motorway is (only) at Zaprešić. The Slovenska vas/Bregana naselje border crossing is usually the better option.

Zgornji Leskovec/Cvetlin border crossing: if there is a traffic jam at Gruškovje, where a great deal of Phyrn motorway transit goes through, take a detour over the hills of Haloze which are surely a more appealing option to waiting in a queue and you can stop at the picturesque and historical castle of Trakošćan on the Croatian side.

In the time of holidays other roads are also congested. See the current traffic conditions in Slovenia:
