The final stage of the 17th Tour de Slovénie that finished in Novo mesto was won by the Italian Francesco Chicchi, with the overall race win going to his compatriot, Vincenzo Nibali.

Vincenzo Nibali (Ita/Liquigas), the third-place winner at this year's Giro d'Italia, is the overall winner of the 17th Tour de Slovénie.

156 km - 1 km to the finish - Nibali of Team Liquigas is in the lead.

155 km – 2 km to the finish - Adria Mobil riders are in the front, the sprint for the stage win is starting.

153 km - 4 km to the finish - The riders of Adria Mobil, Liquigas and Lampre are positioning their sprinters at the front.

151 km - 6 km to the finish - Team Liquigas is leading the peloton in close formation.

148 km - 9 km to the finish - The two breakaway riders have been re-absorbed into the peloton led by Team Liquigas. The final lap has begun.

145 km - 12 km to the finish - As soon as the breakaway has been caught, Matija Kvasina (Cro/Radenska) and a Saxo Bank rider escaped. The two have created a 100-metre gap.

143 km - 14 km to the finish - Uroš Šilar (Slo/Sava), David Tratnik (Slo/Radenska), Martin Mortensen (Den/Vacansoleil) and Vladimir Isajčev (Rus/Xacobeo) are 10 seconds ahead of the main pack.

141 km – 16 km to the finish - The two breakaway riders who have been in the lead since kilometre four have been caught. Two laps remain to the finish.

138 km - 19 km to the finish - Five riders, two from Zheroquadro Radenska and one from Sava, Vacansoleil and Loborika hold a 100-metre advantage over the peloton.

137 km – 20 km to the finish - Vacansoleil and Adria Mobil riders still lead the peloton and the gap to the two breakaway riders has been reduced to just 45 seconds.

133 km - 24 km to the finish - The harsh tempo has caused the peloton to become even more spread-out. The leaders are just one minute 15 seconds ahead.

131 km - 26 km to the finish - The leaders' advantage has dropped to 1:50 and the peloton is headed by several riders from different teams as they compete to position their sprinters as best they can before the stage finish.

127 km - 30 km to the finish - Their advantage has dropped to 2:20 and the peloton is headed by the entire Team Adria Mobil, assisted by a Vacansoleil rider.

126 km - The gap to the breakaway riders has dropped to 2:35, which means that the winner will very likely be decided by the finish sprint of the currently highly spread-out peloton.

125 km - The breakaway riders are 3:30 ahead, the main pack is headed by three Adria Mobil members.

125 km - The main pack has crossed the intermediate sprint section for the first time, up next are five laps along the streets of Novo mesto. The two breakaway riders have a 4-minute advantage, which is bound to decrease by the race end.

118 km - The peloton headed by Adria Mobil riders has begun dictating a faster tempo. They aim to reduce the gap to the breakaway riders and give Marko Kump the best possible starting position for the finish sprint.

110 km - The breakaway riders have a 4-minute advantage and the main pack is headed by Liquigas, Adria Mobil and ISD-Neri riders.

98 km - Stijn and Demarin have 5 minutes of ground on the peloton headed by ISD-Neri, Saxo Bank and Liquigas riders.

95 km - The two breakaway riders are 4:22 ahead. The main pack has reformed and the tempo is again dictated by Liquigas riders.

92 km - More than one half of the main pack have made a stop to urinate. The tempo has slowed down and it appears that the two leaders will increase the gap over the next few kilometres.

84 km - The Frenchman Stephane Rossetto is one of the first to win a jersey at the Tour de Slovénie. If he finishes the stage, he will be the final polka dot jersey winner (leader in the mountains classification) with 18 points, two more than Nibali. The main pack is 3 minutes behind the two leaders.

73 km -The breakaway riders are 3:45 ahead of the main pack.

Mountain finish, 3rd category – Celine (72 km) 1. Massimo Demarin (Cro/Loborika) - 3 points 2. Joseph Stijn (Bel/TopSport) - 2 points 3. Stephane Rossetto (Fra/ Vacansoleil) - 1 point

70 km - The two breakaway riders are approaching the first mountain finish – Celine. Stephane Rossetto, the polka dot jersey wearer, is at the head of the peloton. The Frenchman has the same number of points in the GC rankings as the race leader Vincenzo Nibali who most likely will not be vying for the only remaining point in the mountain finish.

68 km - Saxo Bank riders have begun dictating the tempo in the front, along with the riders of Vacansoleil, Liquigas and ISD-Neri. The breakaway riders are leading by 5 minutes.

64 km - The main pack has passed Kostanjevica na Krki, the gap to the leaders is still 6 minutes.

58 km - There have been no changes in the situation and the leaders' advantage is still 6:15. The roads are dry despite a thick overcast of clouds.

50 km - The situation at the race remains unchanged. It appears the stage winner will be decided in the final sprint of the peloton where the 2008 Novo mesto podium finisher, Francesco Chicchi (Ita/Liquigas), is currently riding.

40 km - The peloton has crossed the intermediate sprint section with a lag of 6 minutes and 15 seconds.

39 km - Liquigas riders dictating the tempo in the front of the peloton were joined by ISD-Neri riders.

Intermediate sprint – Brežice (38 km) 1. Massimo Demarin (Cro/Loborika) - 5 points 2. Joseph Stijn (Bel/TopSport) - 3 points 3. Robert Kišerlovski (Cro/Liquigas) - 1 point

34 km - The leaders are 5:20 ahead and Team Liquigas is leading the peloton.

26 km - The two breakaway riders have secured a 3:20 lead over the main pack.

24 km - The two leaders have increased their advantage to 2:20. Team Liquigas is at the front of the peloton.

19 km - The stage finish is in Novo mesto where Borut Božič triumphed in the 2006 race from Brežice. Last year's winner, Marko Kump, is one of the main favourites at today's stage race.

18 km - The two breakaway riders still hold a 2-minute advantage.

15 km - The two riders in the lead hold a 2-minute advantage over the main pack, which is slowly following them. Team Liquigas is dictating the tempo.

8 km - The breakaway riders are one minute ahead of the main pack, which has slowed down its tempo considerably.

6 km - Joseph Stijn (Bel/TopSport) and Massimo Demarin (Cro/Loborika) have gained 100 metres of ground on the peloton.

1 km - Massimiliano Gentili (Ita/Ceramica) did not start the race and escape attempts began right off the start.

Start – Brežice (157 km)

12.30 - The final stage of the 17th Tour de Slovénie has started with a close-formation ride along the streets of Brežice. After 4 km, the race will start with a flying start. The weather is cloudy and the air temperature is 18 degrees Celsius.

12.25 - The weather forecast for the final stage is looking poor and changes in ranking are very likely. The final laps in Novo mesto will be decisive as a single crash could turn the balance upside-down.

12.24 - There are three intermediate sprints and two 3rd category mountain finishes between Brežice and Novo mesto.

12.23 - Following his triumphant victory in the climb to Krvavec, Vincenzo Nibali (Ita/Liquigas) will be starting the fourth stage as the leader in overall standings. He is looking at a very high chance of winning the race.
